Hakin Abul Fath, an Arabic physician thought up the idea, because he wanted to decrease the bad effects of tobacco smoking. A hookah is essentially a glass jar of water, joined by a tube or body to the dish at the top.

The tobacco is placed in the dish and then covered with hot charcoal. By drawing smoke through the tube, which leads to the water jar, the hookha smoker inhales the aroma.
